Most roof issues can be fixed in a DIY. While you might be really good at do-it-yourself’s, it’s advisable to take all the precautionary measures before getting on the roof. Working on the roof can be a risky affair that could result in injuries (from a fall) or even worse, cause extensive damage to the roof. That said, here are a few fundamental roof safety basics you need to understand before climbing the roof.

1. Weather Safety
Bad weather is a factor you need to consider before getting on the roof. You don’t want to get on the roof with a storm coming. Even the lightest of rains makes working on the roof both tricky and dangerous. Lighting is a serious yet obvious risk too. Lightning is highly unpredictable in that; it can strike 10 miles away from an area receiving rainfall. This is according to data provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

NOAA recommends waiting for at least 30 minutes after a storm before going outdoors. As mentioned earlier on, rainwater makes the roof more slippery, thus increasing the risk of sliding or falling.  To be safe, don’t climb on a wet roof, or wait for a day or two after a storm before working on repairs on the roof.

2. Ladder Safety
Place the ladder on a flat/level ground.
Ensure the ladder is long enough to reach the roof safely. Too short a ladder can be risky.
Make sure the ladder has a hook, and that it is secured in place before climbing.
Abide by the 4-to-1 rule.
Always keep 3 points of contact with the ladder.

3. Other Roof Safety Tips
Wear rubber-soled shoes
Install a roof plank
Avoid wet roofs
Beware of your surrounding at all times.
